Assitej SA is a network organisation bringing together individuals, organisations, companies and institutions promoting theatre for children and young people, and providing young people in Africa with access to the Arts.
Assitej SA is one of 82 country centres of ASSITEJ International, the association for theatre for children and young people. It is one of 18 national chapters of ACYTA (the African Children and Youth Theatre Arena).
ASSITEJ SA has members that include actors, musicians, dancers, directors, choreographers, theatre educators, stage designers and dramatists, as well as theatre companies, organisations and institutions, critics and cultural journalists, culture officers, amateur drama groups, organisers and societies.
ASSITEJ South Africa works to promote international awareness of South African theatre for children and young people, by organising exchanges and guest performances and by facilitating contacts. Members are given access to a global network of information about festivals, performances, courses and seminars all over the world, with the potential to participate in these activities.
Our mission is “theatre that changes the world, one child at a time”. We promote and foster theatre of the highest standard, increase access to cultural experiences for the youth, and build relationships within the sector locally, nationally, across the continent and globally. Through our work, children and young people across the country, are afforded the opportunity to share the experience and richness of diverse forms of culture through interactions and exchanges both locally and internationally.
