Over a million tonnes of edible fish are thrown back into European waters every year, dead. Fishermen hate doing it, but are forced to by EU regulations. It’s called ‘discards', and the Fish Fight Campaign wants to help end this crazy waste.

In January 2011, British chef and food campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall galvanised public outrage when he launched Hugh’s Fish Fight, a television series and campaign highlighting the serious problems we are facing in our seas. It showed that three quarters of our European fish stocks are currently over-fished, and argued that if we don’t act now it may soon be too late.

The impact of these BAFTA award winning programmes has been phenomenal in the UK with supermarkets selling more sustainably caught fish than ever before, and over 780,000 people signing the Fish Fight petition to ban discards.

Now the campaign is going international.

Over the next 12 months, the European Parliament will be reforming the Common Fisheries Policy, and setting up new laws to regulate our seas. Fish Fight is using this crucial opportunity for change to launch similar campaigns in France, Germany, Poland and Spain. We intend to raise the pressure on MEPs to guarantee a strong reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

In each of these 4 countries we have a high profile celebrity, all passionate about fish and conservation, fronting campaigns to investigate the crisis in their seas and the problems with the Common Fisheries Policy as it stands.

European Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki, recently said “FISH FIGHT has a great power, really a great power! Only a broad societal awareness and public support can bring about real change in fisheries policy. We need effective campaigns like Fish Fight to wake people up to what is happening in our seas.”

If handled effectively, these campaigns have a very real chance of changing the future of our seas for the better for ourselves, our children, and generations to come.
