Joseph Gergel is a curator and photographer based in Lagos and New York. He is a curator at the African Artists’ Foundation in Lagos, Nigeria, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of contemporary art in Africa. He has organised exhibitions including Obinna Makata: Metahistories, Uche Uzorka: The Organic, Nigeria Now: Emerging Trends of Contemporary Art in Nigeria (Art Africa Miami), Nigerian Nostalgia Project, the National Art Competition 2012, and served as co-curator of LagosPhoto 2012. Gergel has contributed texts of art criticism to ThisDay Nigeria, Art South Africa, Geurnica, The New Museum Paper, and Interventions Journal. Gergel obtained his Masters Degree in Art History and Curatorial Studies at Columbia University in New York (2012) and his Undergraduate Degree at New York University (2009). Before his position as curator at the African Artists’ Foundation, Gergel worked in the Curatorial Departments of the Museum of Modern Art (Photography) and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. Gergel will serve as Managing Editor of Art Base Africa, an online database of contemporary African Art, which has been recently funded by the Prince Claus Fund.
