Mangaung Drama and Dance Group

Dance Project in South Africa

The mission of the MDG (Mangaung Drama and Dance Group) is to give disadvantaged youth the opportunity for personal growth through drama and dance.

To enable people to fully experience personal growth that the arts offer, they need to be exposed to formal, expert instruction. Learning in an informal manner will neither properly prepare aspiring artists for a professional career, nor satisfy a serious art lover.

The aim of the MDG Studio programme is to provide concentrated professional dance tuition to a select group of youth who have been exposed to drama and dance disciplines for two years through our other activities; that is, by attending performances, and participating in productions such as staged and informal productions and puppetry theatre. Thus, the students that progress to the MDG Studio are carefully screened and selected individuals.

Objectives of the Studio Programme
• To have at least 20 students from the disadvantaged community enrolled in the Studio/Residency Programme.
• To have all 20 students take a practical Trinity of London external examination on an annual basis.
• In the medium term, we will have more properly trained disadvantaged youth who are equipped to audition for professional positions or become teachers of drama.
• The broader aim of the project is to further the MDG mission of developing young adults who are confident, articulate and who can fully appreciate the arts.
• The MDG specially trained Studio students will act as role model for our other members who will have hope that their aspirations as properly trained actors will be met.
• Our students will be better prepared to participate fully in MDG productions, delivering better performances for our audiences.
• The reputation of our organisation as one that provides quality training will be enhanced.
• The organisation will generate more income from its productions and thus become more sustainable.
