Melanie Cleary - New Years Day

Cleary’s second solo exhibition New Years Day features Durban’s North Beach.

The series was shot over a period of two days, 31 December 2011 and 1 January 2012. Cleary set out to photograph the crowds and to capture the atmosphere on the beaches and the pools. Her photographs suggests that fundamentally this ritual is about having good family fun in the sea and the pools. It is a day of camaraderie and gives the visitors a sense of belonging and a sense of ownership.
