R3000 fees are broken down to R2000 for rent and R500 each for administration and coaching. This includes housing, studio space (private bedroom, shared washroom/kitchen/living space, shared studio), project facilitation before & during the residency as well as individual coaching throughout the program’s duration. Travel expenses, living expenses and materials are all at the artist’s expense.

Residency activities are largely self-directed, tailored to the needs and creative practices of each visiting artist. Our program is open to creatives working in a wide range of disciplines including painting, photography, textiles, street art, sculpture, performance, film, music and more. It has hosted over 25 artists from since its inception in December of 2010. Previous residents have traveled to Cape Town from Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, the UK, Japan, Venezuela and the USA, each contributing to a network of like-minded individuals and organizations that spans the globe.

The program includes shared live/work accommodations, a public artist talk, opportunities for community/public art projects and a possible exhibition at /A WORD OF ART or at one of our partner galleries in Cape Town based on proposals by artists. It also includes project administration/facilitation, individual coaching and PR/marketing for the duration of the program. Assistance sourcing materials may also be possible, depending on the projects’ needs.

Exhibitions of work created while in residence are scheduled on a case-by-case basis, and may either be booked into our main exhibition space or our adjacent project space. Exhibition space allocation is dependent on availability and relevance to our gallery mandate, found here:

Artists are selected not only for their artistic merit but as well as their interest in engaging with other artists and members of the larger community. Our program combines a shared living and working space with a great deal of community outreach activities, thus necessitating a practice that allows for creation in a vibrant, collaborative environment.

Applications must include:
