Salon Urbain de Douala

  • Logo Doual'art -

Doual'art is a contemporary art centre and research laboratory created in 1991 in Cameroon, directed by Marilyn Douala Bell and Didier Schaub. For the last 18 years, it has been fostering cultural projects and commissioned site-specific art interventions within Douala. Doual'art works as an intermediary between artists, social and economic actors and local collectives.

Located on the borders of the Wouri 's estuary, Douala is a harbour city
considered without soul, endowed with a warm and wet climate, subject to
breaks of water supply, victim of floods given rhythm by monsoons ...
The artists will reveal to the public, a piece of the contemporary identity
of this part of the world, otherwise characterized by the resurgence of the
traditions of coastal people, by the ecology of luxuriant mangrove swamp and
the perpetual inventiveness to serve survival ...
To understand the context and appreciate the relevancy of the artistic
propositions, several conferences and round table discussions will allow to
confront the knowledge and the points of view of curators, architects, art
critics, experts in urban management, ecologists of the Cameroonian Coast
and town planners.

Doual'art invites cultural practitioners, researchers and the
wider public to participate in the second edition of the three-year festival
of public art, SUD2010 - Salon Urbain de Douala - from the 4th to 11th
December 2010, under the patronage of the Urban Council of Douala.
The general curator, Simon Njami and his associate curators, Koyo Kouoh,
Elvira Dyangani and Didier Schaub, selected 18 artists whose 16 projects
will animate the artistic and urban scene of the economic capital of
Cameroon, offering multiple sensitivities on the theme of 'water and the
city' of Douala.
