‘Uprooting the Gaze: foreign places familiar patterns’ the exhibition curated by Christine Eyene as part of Brighton Photo Fringe will be showcased at the Fringe Focus space, in the same venue as Brighton Photo Biennial exhibition ‘New Ways of Looking’ curated by the internationally acclaimed photographer, editor and curator Martin Parr.
Every two years Brighton Photo Fringe brings together a city-wide festival of exhibitions and events that runs alongside the Brighton Photo Biennial. In 2008 Brighton Photo Fringe included 82 exhibitions, featured works by over 300 artists and had an audience of 45,000-50,000. For 2010 the festival includes over 120 exhibitions.
Brighton Photo Fringe works in partnership with Brighton Photo Biennial, collaborating on various projects and creating joint platforms, exhibitions, talks and portfolio reviews. This year, the Fringe Focus space is located at the Old Co-op Building, a venue shared with Brighton Photo Biennial.
‘Uprooting the Gaze: foreign places familiar patterns’ features Nestor Da (Burkina Faso), François-Xavier Gbré (France/Ivory Coast), Baudouin Mouanda (Congo-Brazzaville), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Uche Okpa-Iroha (Nigeria) and Breeze Yoko (South Africa).
Alongside the exhibition are programmed one public event in Brighton and an artists’ talk at Rivington Place presented by Autograph ABP, London, on 6 October 2010.
‘Uprooting the Gaze’ was developed by curator Christine Eyene in collaboration with Brighton Photo Fringe and Fondation Blachère.
This project receives generous support from Spectrum Photographic, major photographic sponsor of the exhibition providing the highest quality in production and presentation, and the British Council, funding the visit of all six artists to the UK under the Council’s pioneering programme Creative Coalitions, which aims to make links between Africa and Europe and to support a vibrant and sustainable African creative sector.
